Deutsche Welle (DW), 50 Years ago
Germany’s International Radio service launched it’s first broadcast on 3rd May 1953
– on AM radio in German. Only a year later radio programme begin in English, French,
Spanish and Portuguese, supplemented by Arabic in 1959.
From this modest start, Deutsche Welle developed in to one of the worlds most important
international broadcasters with loyal listeners around the world, in an ever increasing
number of languages, and mediums. Spoken word, DW-RADIO, also pictures, DW-TV and
finally on the internet, DW-WORLD.DE.
Deutsche Welle as commission to “provide listeners and viewers abroad with a comprehensive
picture of political, cultural and economic life in Germany and to present and explain
the German position in important issues.”
DW’s current corporate profile defines clear focal points and aims: programme services
continue to be tailored to regions, the process of European unification is being
extensively observed and intercultural dialogue – in particular with the Islamic
world – is being intensified. The programme makes it mark with focus on the areas
of politics, business and culture.
To better reach it’s most important groups, DW increasingly uses FM frequencies
for large cities and is a major participant in the market launch of digital AM radio.
Partners All Over the World, DW transmits it diverse programmes via a global satellite
network. DW-Radio, in addition, broadcasts via AM – in future digital – radio, as
well as via medium wave and FM to specific regions. Many thousands of partner stations
around the world broadcast DW programmes. DW-Radio and DW-TV are also available
on the internet as live-stream and on-demand programmes at DW-WORLD.DE. |
